Cooking: Start with simple dishes

Cooking is an important life skill that helps you be independent of your mother, partner or restaurant. If you are able to take care of yourself, you also have full control over your diet and can prepare healthy, balanced meals. Cooking is also a form of creativity that allows you to experiment, try new recipes and express your individual preferences.

Many people find cooking relaxing and can relieve some of their everyday stress while preparing food. Cooking expands your cultural understanding when you try new dishes from different countries. It also helps to save money, as going to restaurants is now very expensive, although you often get better quality when you create your own dishes.

Cooking will enrich your life

Beginners may feel overwhelmed at first, especially if they are not yet familiar with basic techniques, ingredients or cooking equipment. It is also difficult when special or fresh ingredients are required that not every grocery store carries as a matter of course. However, if you have special dietary needs (e.g. due to allergies or conscious vegetarianism), you are generally aware of this.

Cooking can sometimes be very time-consuming, especially if you want to prepare a complex dish. It’s not always easy to manage for people with busy schedules, but it’s worth it! Sometimes it can be difficult to motivate yourself. Looking for particularly creative recipes can help to awaken the desire to cook, but you should start small and build up slowly.

Develop basic cooking skills

For a healthy meal, you can prepare a vegetable stir-fry by chopping up your favorite vegetables, such as peppers, carrots, and broccoli, and frying them in a pan with a little oil and spices. A roasted chicken breast is also a basic kitchen skill – a side dish of vegetables or rice goes well with it.

An omelette is also quick to make and can be filled with cheese, vegetables, or ham. Finally, you can also prepare rice with vegetables by boiling the rice and combining it with steamed or roasted vegetables. All of these dishes are simple, quick to prepare, and help refine your cooking skills each time.

Experiment with ingredients and flavors

In a next step, try spicing up your kitchen with slightly more sophisticated dishes. An excellent choice is risotto. Use arborio rice, onions, broth, and a splash of white wine to create a creamy and flavorful dish. You can vary it by adding mushrooms, asparagus or seafood to explore different flavors.

If you’re keen to try something Asian, consider Pad Thai. This is fried rice noodles enriched with eggs, tofu or shrimp and a delicious sauce made from tamarind, fish sauce and peanuts. The combination of sweet, salty and sour will definitely delight you.

For a simple curry, use coconut milk, vegetables and chicken, tofu or lentils seasoned with different curry pastes or powders. Serve with fragrant rice of your choice (basmati or jasmine) to create a perfect dish that is both filling and full of flavor.
